Build the layers correctly
A green roof starts with a structure strong enough to carry it.
One of the most important factors is the construction below. A garden building, shed, log store, garden office or other structure must be designed or verified to carry the full weight of the green roof — including the system when it is saturated with water.
Once the load capacity is right, successful living roofs depend on reliable waterproofing, root protection, drainage, water retention, suitable growing medium and planting.
We plan each roof around the structure, roof falls, outlets, access for maintenance, available daylight and how the roof will be watered during dry periods.
Where a living roof is not practical — for example in deep shade, with very limited light, or where regular watering is not possible — an artificial planted roof finish can create a similar visual effect without the same growing requirements.
The finished roof may look simple, but the strength below and every hidden layer above it are what make the installation work properly.

For living roofs we select suitable substrate and planting for light, exposure and maintenance. Where light or irrigation is too limited, an artificial green-roof finish can be a practical visual alternative.

Common questions
Can any shed or garden building take a green roof?+
No. The supporting structure is one of the first things we assess. A shed, log store, garden office or bespoke garden building must be strong enough for the complete roof build-up and its saturated weight. Existing structures may need strengthening, and new structures should be designed with the green roof load in mind from the beginning.
Does a green roof have to use living plants?+
No. Living roofs are ideal where there is suitable light and a realistic way to water and maintain the planting. In very shaded locations, beneath dense trees, or where irrigation and maintenance are impractical, we can also create an artificial planted roof finish. It provides the visual effect of greenery, although it does not provide the habitat and rainwater benefits of a living roof.
Can this be included in a larger landscaping project?+
Yes. We can coordinate the green roof with a new garden building, shed, log store or garden office, as well as surrounding paving, planting, drainage, boundaries and other construction work.
Can you work from an existing design?+
Yes. We can work from suitable drawings and specifications, while checking that the proposed construction, waterproofing, drainage and roof build-up are practical for the site.
How do you price the work?+
Cost depends on roof size, access, the existing structure, any strengthening required, waterproofing and drainage details, and whether the finish is a living planted system or an artificial alternative. Photos, rough measurements and a postcode are enough to begin.
